Fatherhood

Where do I get off pretending to be a dad?

Dads can change their own oil on their cars. Dads wear ties and suits or outdated shirts and pants and black socks with sandals. Dads know things, lots of things, like the entire defensive line of the '75 Cowboys or the proper way to tighten lugnuts. Dads are big and strong, and can beat up other kids' dads.

Someday soon, I'll be exposed as a big fraud. I mean, what can I pass down to our son? The ability to make nouns and verbs agree? The lyrics to the B-52's "Rock Lobster" (hands down the best new wave song for youngsters)? A love for Skittles?

Well, it may not be much, but it'll have to do. There's also time to read up on all that other stuff I should have learned in school, like how to balance a checkbook. And if I can't fill in all the gaping holes of knowledge, that's what his aunts, uncles and television are for.

We celebrated Father's Day (over two weekends - don't ask) by taking Colin to his first postnatal baseball game and a trip to Brookfield Zoo. While Crazy Legs seemed to have fun, I think we had an even better time experiencing these things with him. It was a wonderful couple of Father's Days and made me realize how much fun it really is to be with our little family.

In the meantime, I'll cut to the chase and give you all what you came here for: Baby Pictures.

Here Colin demonstrates his new talent, drooling on the railing of his crib. I mean, pulling himself up.

He's getting quite strong. Soon they'll be no stopping him. He makes me happier every day, when I'm not worried about how I'm going to teach him how to tie a square knot or fix a leaky toilet.
